Former Florida wide receiver Chris Doering suggests SEC make own playoff amid Georgia rout in national title game

With Georgia up big on TCU in the College Football Playoff Championship on Monday, many took to Twitter to boast on the SEC and its dominance. That included ESPN analyst and former Florida receiver Chris Doering, who took it a step further with a bold suggestion.
“The @sec should hold their own playoff like (SEC commissioner) @GregSankey threatened a few years ago,” Doering wrote. Would be much more compelling.”
Doering’s tweet referenced when Sankey made the same suggestion last year after Alabama and Georgia had just played each other in the national title game. It marked the second time since the inception of the CFP in 2014 that two SEC teams had played each other for the championship.
Adding to the case for the SEC is that the league has claimed a national title in five of the eight years since the College Football Playoff was introduced, soon to be six of nine assuming Georgia hangs on for the win. The conference will also have claimed four consecutive national championships.
However, while Doering’s idea might be a fun thought, it’s highly unlikely to actually happen. The CFP has already agreed to expand to 12 teams by 2024, so there will be plenty of room for SEC teams in the future either way.

Until then, though, the SEC can continue to boast about its dominance in the College Football Playoff. The conference has had at least one team in the field every year, and will hope to continue that streak next season.
Kirby Smart gets big bonus after national title win
Prior to the 2022 season, Georgia signed Kirby Smart to a massive new contract, which included plenty of incentives. He hit a big one Monday night in grand fashion.
The Bulldogs knocked off TCU in the College Football Playoff national championship 65-7 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. By leading Georgia to its second consecutive national title, Smart earned himself another $1 million, according to Front Office Sports.
It was quite a way to earn a big payday.
Georgia dominated TCU in every facet of Monday’s title game en route to the 58-point victory. The Bulldogs got another all-time performance from Stetson Bennett, who threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns in the air while rushing for two touchdowns on the ground, to win his second straight title.
