Florida State is fresh off of their best season under head coach Mike Norvell, winning the ACC title after going undefeated in during the regular season. But will they be able to replicate that same success next season after losing a multitude of key impact players?

Twelve Seminoles were invited to this year’s NFL Combine, representing a large part of Florida State’s production from the 2023 season. And with that in mind, On3’s JD PicKell asked Norvell if the team’s scheme will change at all ahead of next season given the drastic changes to their personnel and roster.

“I think every year you’re going to continue to tie your schemes and what you do offensively, defensively, and special teams to the guys you have,” Norvell said.

Norvell used wide receiver Keon Coleman as an example of players sparking schematic change, with the Michigan State transfer proving quickly upon his arrival on campus last year that the Seminoles’ passing game should feature him as much as possible.

“We didn’t have Keon Coleman, he wasn’t on the roster till the summer and that was not something we anticipated, not something that was really expected,” Norvell admitted. “But when he came in he was a special player that brought a great dynamic to this team, so we were obviously excited about what he was able to do and accomplish. And even for him he did some things that he had not done before.”

Balancing the scheme of an offensive or defense and the strengths of players is an equilibrium that all coaches look to achieve as they prepare to face opponents. As Norvell made it clear that Florida State will continue doing their best to let the talents of their players dictate their strategy.

“That’s what this program’s about, it’s about trying to put playmakers in a position to showcase all of their skills and talents and it’s gonna change year in and year out to make sure that we’re fitting things to the guys that we have,” Norvell said.

“I think we’ve got a very talented and explosive group that we have here in Tallahassee and excited to see them continue to work to put themselves in a position to go be showcased.”
