The saga regarding Louisville athletic director Vince Tyra has taken an unexpected turn. After being widely expected to leave Louisville for Florida State, a new report is putting a hold on everything.

“According to a source, Vince Tyra has turned down the offer to become Florida State’s athletic director,” revealed Louisville radio host Mark Ennis. “It is unclear if he intends to remain the athletic director at Louisville or return to a private sector role.”

Things seemed set in stone as late as Wednesday, as Tyra was let out of his non-compete clause by Louisville.

Earlier this week, Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde reported Florida State University had a “mutual and serious” interest in Tyra to fill the same position. Originally, Forde stated that a resolution could’ve come as soon as last Monday. Obviously, it hasn’t happened — and now seems seriously in doubt.

According to Forde, Tyra was looking to leave Louisville due to “strained relations” between himself and Louisville President Neeli Bendapudi. However, news broke on Thursday that Bendapudi was leaving Louisville to become the next president of Penn State.

Evidently, the turn of events regarding Bendapudi influenced Tyra’s decision to turn down Florida State. As for the Seminoles, their search remains ongoing — looking to replace former athletic director David Coburn, who held the position since 2019.

Vince Tyra seemed like a shoe-in at Florida State. However, it now seems like the Seminoles will be looking elsewhere for an athletic director.

The Current ACC Landscape

In addition to the Louisville news, Forde discussed the interesting landscape of ACC athletics. Elaborating, he focused on the rumored moves that could reshape the conference as we know it.

“ACC could be looking at two intra-league AD changes almost simultaneously, with Clemson’s Dan Radakovich seriously involved at Miami,” Forde tweeted in the thread of reports.

In addition to multiple potential athletic director moves on the horizon, the ACC has multiple football coaching positions open. After Virginia Tech hired its next coach in Brett Pry, Virginia and Duke continue their search. Additionally, Miami made a splash hire earlier this week — bringing Mario Cristobal in from Oregon.
