Former Florida State star fullback dies in tragic automobile accident

Clarence “Pooh Bear” Williams, who was one of the most beloved members of the Florida State backfield in the 1990s, died following a car accident on Thursday morning. He was just 47 years old. He was the head coach at Crescent City for about five years and in 2021 he coached the defensive backs for Palataka High School.
Palataka’s head coach Patrick Turner told The Osceola that Williams was set to take over as defensive coordinator for their 2022 season.
Williams enjoyed his most successful seasons with Florida State during the 1993, 1995 and 1996 seasons, before suiting up for a brief stint with the Buffalo Bills in the National Football League. During his freshman season in 1993, he had 39 carries for 266 rushing yards, averaging 6.82 yards per carry, and three touchdowns. In 1995, he racked up 12 touchdowns despite seeing his yards per carry average dip to 2.8.
“Pooh Bear and Warrick Dunn were something at the goal line,” longtime Florida State running backs coach Billy Sexton said in an article written by Bob Ferrante of The Osceola. “Pooh Bear would run right through that defense. He was 275 (pounds) and could run a 4.7 40 with good hands. He had some unbelievable games. He was easy to coach. Always had a smile on his face and was a heck of a fullback.”

His nickname and physique allowed Williams him to become a popular fan favorite for Florida State. Chants of “Poooooh” filled the Seminoles stadium when the fullback touched the ball. The news of Williams’ death was reported by the Palatka High School football team’s social media accounts and it was then confirmed by the Palatka Daily News.
He arrived at Florida State at 240-pounds and continued to grow during his time with the Seminoles. Williams won a national championship with Florida State during the 2013 season. Funeral arrangements for Williams are still pending, according to The Osceola.
