Jaime Ferrer on the significance of Florida State's win over Virginia, strong performance on Father's Day
Florida State kept their season alive on Sunday, avoiding elimination from the College World Series in a convincing 7-3 win over Virginia after dropping their first game in Omaha to top-ranked Tennessee on Friday in a back-and-forth battle.
Junior outfielder Jaime Ferrer has been coming up big for the Seminoles for the entire postseason and continued to do so on Sunday. Hitting two homers against the Cavaliers with 4 RBIs to now lead all players with 17 RBIs in this year’s NCAA Tournament. And after the game, he was asked what Sunday’s win meant now that Florida State once again survived and advanced.

“It means everything, the opportunity to come out here. We started 0-1, but we’re still dancing. We’re still competing and we’re gonna compete until the last out is made and I know what this team is made of,” Ferrer said.
“And Carson [Dorsey] going out there and giving us seven, or however many, innings he gave us after what they did to him in the ACC Tournament is awesome. It shows the determination, the grit that we have as a team, and the love that we have for each other. So it’s awesome. We’re gonna go back to the hotel, regroup, and come back on Tuesday and try to do the same thing.”
Florida State scored seven runs on seven hits, but Dorsey’s performance on the mound kept Virginia away from striking distance for the majority of the game. Pitching six shutout innings before giving up two runs in the seventh inning after throwing 106 pitches and striking out seven batters. A stark contrast from when he allowed four runs in just four at-bats in the seventh inning of the Seminoles’ ACC Tournament matchup with Virginia.

Ferrer has now had three home runs in his two games in Omaha, and when he was asked if he had a favorite so far, he opened up about why his three-run homer in the fifth inning on Sunday was particularly special on Father’s Day.
“Probably the second one today, Ferrer said. “I think hitting two on Father’s Day is awesome, especially with my dad here in the stands. I’m excited to give him a hug, and go eat dinner with him after the game, and enjoy enjoy his day, and celebrate him.”
“He’s been everything to me,” Ferrer continued about his father. “I found a video of me hitting BP growing up and he had like three trash cans stacked trying to get me and my brothers to be the best versions of ourselves. I owe everything to him and I saw him before the game and I called him last night so I’m excited to spend the day with him and tell him how much he’s been there for me and how big has been for me.”
Ferrer’s baseball journey that started off at a young age with his father has now led him to college baseball’s biggest stage. As he and his teammates will rest up until Tuesday and play the loser of North Carolina and Tennessee’s matchup on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. ET.
