After the first inning of Florida State’s elimination matchup against North Carolina in the College World Series, FSU left-handed pitcher Andrew Armstrong showed signs of discomfort on the mound. After the trainer checked on him, Armstrong threw another scoreless inning.

It will take more than a little pain to get Armstrong off the mound. During an in-game interview, FSU head coach Link Jarrett pulled back the curtain on Armstrong’s minor injury.

“He had a little something in his rib in the preseason that got him and it started to flare up,” Jarrett said. “He said, ‘Coach, once I get loose, I’m fine. I’m fine.’ I’m like, ‘Well, you have to tell me that. I’m over here riding what you tell me.’ Once he got into it, he felt better.

“Now, the velocity also ticked down. So we’re trying to watch this thing pitch by pitch and maybe that long inning helped him kind of regroup and he got to go back into this little net and throw a little bit so we’ll see. But, he actually had been throwing good and inducing some weak contact. Hopefully, we can keep it up.”

Through the first three innings, Andrew Armstrong has only allowed one run and has not thrown a walk. Jarrett will continue to keep his starter on the mound until his performance begins to decline or he shows further signs of discomfort.

“We’re just gonna have to give this thing the eye test,” Jarrett said. “Ultimately, we’ll make that decision. But, as long as he says he feels OK and he’s commanding it, we got a shot.”
