Even Superman has off days. Earlier this week, head coach Mike Norvell discussed FSU wide receiver Keon Coleman’s surprising lack of production in Week 3.

“That’s part of football sometimes,” Norvell said. “We don’t go into games thinking we’re going to get this great player the ball. When you look at it, there’s a little bit of give and take. We snapped the ball 58 times, and he was targeted, I think it was three, four times throughout the contest and unfortunately didn’t result in any catches. That’s part of it.”

Perhaps Florida State should go into games with the intent of putting the ball in Coleman’s hands. On Saturday, the Seminoles narrowly defeated Boston College 31-29. In the shockingly close win, Coleman never caught a pass.

The 6-foot-4 wide receiver’s lack of production is a stark contrast from FSU’s previous two contests. In the first two games combined, Coleman amassed 12 receptions for 170 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

Keon Coleman not the odd man out

Norvell claims Coleman isn’t the only one who’s faced few receptions in the past.

“You look at the week before, Jaheim Bell didn’t have a catch. We scored 66 points and Johnny Wilson didn’t have a catch. Other guys took advantage of opportunities,” Norvell said. “We want to get our play makers the ball.

“There were a couple of opportunities we had, and whether it’s different things we can do to make sure we’re finishing those plays, whether it’s — obviously I’ve got to do a good job to make sure — not to say force, but you want to make sure those guys get active in the game. It’s just one of those things that occurred.”

The unusual outcome nearly led to disastrous results. Florida State recorded just 222 passing yards in its win against BC, its least in a game yet. For reference, the Seminoles are averaging just over 275 passing yards per game.

No worries

Despite Coleman’s lack of production in Week 3, Norvell is far from concerned for his star.

“His attitude and his approach, he’s a real one. He’s an absolute real ballplayer that wants to make an impact,” Norvell said. “He wants to have a big game. He wants to help this team win. That’s what makes him special. Definitely excited to see his continued growth, our continued growth.”

Coleman will look to make his impact felt again this weekend. On Saturday, FSU will take on Clemson at noon ET. The game will be broadcast on ABC.
