Florida State head coach Mike Norvell says team confidence shaken after 35-11 loss

Florida State is in the midst of a forgettable season, and don’t expect the Seminoles to try to break the mold this weekend by debuting the program’s turquoise jerseys against Charleston Southern.

For whatever reason, coach Mike Norvell and the crew have opted to keep those in-house.

“No, I mean we’re going to stay in traditional dress,” Norvell said. “Obviously so much respect for the Seminole Heritage, as I mentioned the other day. But it’s something we’ve done, kind of used them a little bit in recruiting.”

Various Florida State programs have broken out the special-look turquoise jerseys as a way to celebrate Seminole Heritage, which occurs in November, during Native American Heritage Month. The football team has just yet to join.

That doesn’t mean the possibility has been ruled out down the road.

“There could be future opportunities where we break those out, but this week we’re going to stay with the classic look,” Norvell said.

Florida State readying for new staff hires

Following Florida State’s slide to 1-9, Norvell opted to fire both coordinators and his receivers coach. He’s begun the process of vetting potential new assistant coaches since.

“Yeah you know, this last week was, I mean there was a lot working through it,” Norvell said. “And even throughout the course of this past weekend that was a lot of time that I poured into that, whether it was conversations, whether it was evaluation, whether it’s been a really good amount of interest in the positions. So just kind of sequencing through what could be the right fit in each of the roles.”

Norvell plans to section off some time during his week going forward to focus on new Florida State staff hires, even though he noted those hires likely won’t occur until after the regular season ends.

“I’m probably going to, out of respect for all people in the regular season, we’re working through the process,” Norvell said. “But like I said last week, ideally when the regular season ends you’d like to be able to have a really strong direction of where it’s going.

“There might be guys that could potentially continue to be playing where either announcements, agreements that are made, we’ll see if that’s potential options. There could be guys that assume roles really quick after the season ends. So that’s kind of, there’s still a lot of ebb and flow as decisions are made on who’s going to take those positions, and obviously all the conversations that surround that.”
