Mike Norvell hot seat: AD Michael Alford remains 'fully committed' to Florida State coach

After a 3-0 start to the season, Florida State has lost four consecutive games, most recently falling 20-13 to Stanford. On Monday, Florida State athletic director Michael Alford released a statement addressing the program’s shortcomings and Mike Norvell‘s status as head coach.
“Florida State football benefits from unmatched passionate support from the entire FSU family, and the commitment to our football program is unwavering,” the statement read. “We rightfully have high expectations in everything we do to represent Florida State in the manner that built our reputation as one of college football’s best programs, cultivating an extraordinary group of supporters nationally and globally.
“We embrace those expectations while also sharing the deep disappointment when results on the field are short of that standard. As we continue to move forward this season, our comprehensive assessment of the football program will be completed at season’s end. Meanwhile, we are fully committed to helping Coach Novell and the 2025 Seminoles strongly rebound in the coming weeks.”
With Penn State and Florida firing James Franklin and Billy Napier respectively, fans have questioned Norvell’s future as Florida State’s head coach this past week. Many fans called for Norvell to be fired at the end of last season after the Seminoles finished with a 2-10 record.
However, the FSU athletic department ultimately backed Norvell, who had led the Seminoles to an ACC championship the prior season. Norvell overhauled his coaching staff this offseason and, early this fall, the changes appeared to have paid off.
FSU jumpstarted its season with a statement win over Alabama. After winning its next two games, the Seminoles soared as high as No. 7 in the AP Top 25. Now, sitting at 0-4 in conference play, FSU fans are wondering what went wrong.

Evidently, Mike Norvell will have at least until the end of the season to attempt a turnaround. After FSU’s 20-13 loss to Stanford on Saturday, Norvell revealed where he believes he stands with the school’s administration.
“I’m pouring everything I have into this university with every bit of the work, the focus, the absolute edge and urgency to get this better,” Norvell said. “At the end of the day, it’s about the on-the-field results, and we’ve come up short. We’ve not done it.
“… I believe in all the things that we stand for, what it needs to be and how we need to do it. But, the last results have not been good enough, and they have to get better. And, that’s something that I’m going to continue to put everything I have into making sure that that gets done.”
Florida State has a bye this week before returning to the field on Nov. 1 for a showdown against Wake Forest. The Seminoles will look to return to form during their break.
