Mike Norvell updates where Tommy Castellanos stands with waiver for extra year of eligibility
Mike Norvell addressed where Tommy Castellanos stood as far as a waiver for an extra year of eligibility. It is possible he’s able to return to Florida State in 2026.
But for now, that decision is in limbo as he is at the third school of his career. Florida State is also battling for bowl eligibility when they take on rival Florida this weekend.
“I mean, obviously that’s all things that are in process, and we will see where that goes,” Norvell said. “I mean, our focus is for this week on going to play the best game that we can play. And, you know, I know that Tommy … his potential and future growth in this game, I do believe is, you know he’s got a high ceiling, and you know he just, his work ethic and his determination which he brings, you know gives me a lot of confidence for what, you know what he can be.
“And you know whether it’s if he does get another year or if not, I mean, I know he’s gonna work to go maximize the opportunity.”
This season, Castellanos has 2,520 yards, 13 touchdowns, eight interceptions, a 58% completion percentage. He also has 480 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns.
Over the course of his career with UCF, Boston College and Florida State, Castellanos has 6,209 yards, 46 touchdowns, 27 interceptions and a 58.4% completion percentage. He also has 1,907 rushing yards and 23 rushing touchdowns.

“I don’t know the answer to that … I’m just living in the moment, man,” Castellanos said. “I truly believe, and I trust in whatever God’s got planned for me in my life. And I’m at peace with it. I trust in God and his plan and whatever he’s got planned for me.”
Castellanos played in five games as a freshman at UCF back in 2022, so he was unable to preserve that year. But perhaps a waiver will allow him to return.
If anything, Castellanos could potentially come back to Florida State under Norvell. The latter was granted his return to the program in 2026 and a chance to turn things around.
After a 2-10 campaign and a 5-6 record through the first 11 games this year, Norvell might be on thin ice. But Castellanos and crew can certainly point things in the right direction if they beat Florida this weekend.
