Last time Florida State was out on the field, they finished the Stanford game without quarterback Tommy Castellanos. A big hit took Castellanos out of the game late in the fourth quarter, leaving Kevin Sperry to attempt a comeback victory. Florida State wound just short, losing a heartbreaker on the road.

Thankfully, a bye week took place, and Castellanos received extra time to recover. On Wednesday, head coach Mike Norvell provided a positive update on where his quarterback stands heading into the Wake Forest matchup.

“I’m feeling very confident in where it’s trending,” Norvell said. “But obviously, we’ll be able to get a little bit more as we get on in the week. I think he’s handled what he’s been asked to do very well.”

Seven games this year for Castellanos this year has produced mixed results — personally and when looking at the team. He has thrown for 1,607 yards, nine touchdowns, and five interceptions thus far. You have to take Castellanos’ feet into the equation too, adding 319 yards and five touchdowns to the mix.

If Castellanos cannot play vs. Wake Forest, Sperry is likely still the guy. His small sample size is a positive one, completing 12 of 17 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns. A Hail Mary attempt at Stanford nearly made Sperry an instant legend.

However, Norvell believes Castellanos is on the right track to playing. Possibly big news for Florida State as they look to get back to winning ways.

Tommy Castellanos in middle of a roller coaster season for Florida State

Florida State started out the season 3-0, including a massive win over Alabama. Many thought taking down the Crimson Tide meant the Seminoles were back on the right track. Two more nonconference games against lesser opponents meant a chance to attack ACC play was right there.

However, ever since then, it’s been a massive struggle with four straight losses. All of them within a possession, none tougher than a double overtime loss to Virginia. Dropping a rivalry game to Miami certainly does not help the cause either.

Norvell once again finds himself on the hot seat after cooling things off following the season opener. Taking down Wake Forest might be a good start, now pushing to finish with a winning record. Some favorable games are apparent on the upcoming schedule. Five games remain, all of which Florida State is hoping Castellanos will play.
