The Florida State Seminoles have already won more games in 2025 than they did in all of 2024. There are a few reasons why head coach Mike Norvell has seen his team turn things around. None, however, is as important as transfer quarterback Tommy Castellanos.

After the Week 1 upset of Alabama, it was immediately clear how important Castellanos is to Florida State’s success this season. That’s also what made his injury against Kent State so scary moving forward. Luckily, now Norvell says that he’s improving and feels confident about his status without being committal.

“Today he was able to get some work,” Mike Norvell said. “I think I feel confident about where that’s gonna be. You, obviously, will continue to see how the week plays out.”

Castellanos left last Saturday’s game against Kent State in the first half with an apparent ankle injury. He would not be able to return in that game. Notably, however, after putting up 35 points in the first quarter, the game was never in question, and there was also no reason to push Castellanos back onto the field. Notably, he was able to jog into the locker room and was seen standing on the sidelines during the second half.

That injury occurred just before a weather delay. Castellanos would throw a pass before getting rolled up by multiple defenders. He would make it to the locker room with a slight limp. In his place, freshman quarterback Kevin Sperry entered for his first career action. Luckily, after the game, Castellanos had a positive attitude.

“All good,” Castellanos said after the game. “Just got rolled up a little bit. All good. 100 percent.”

Castellanos finished the day completing 10 of 13 passes for 205 yards and an interception. He’d also rush for 54 yards and two touchdowns. That moved him to a 71.1 completion percentage, 594 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, an interception, 139 rushing yards, and three rushing touchdowns on the season.

Florida State is now 3-0 on the season. That includes the upset win over Alabama before taking care of business against East Texas A&M and Kent State. Now, when the Seminoles aren’t going to be catching anyone by surprise, they’ll have to deal with an uptick in competition again. Florida State has a road trip on a short week to Virginia. After that, they’ll return home to play rival Miami in what should be a massive showdown. Getting Castellanos completely healthy has to be Norvell’s top priority.
