Glenn Schumann reveals year-to-year changes in Georgia defense

Even with how dominant offenses have become in college football, Georgia has been reliant on its defense under Kirby Smart. The unit has been so good, the Bulldogs were able to win the national championship, despite going up against high-powered offenses on a yearly basis.
Georgia co-defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann talked about how even after lifting the College Football Playoff trophy, changes will need to be made. Offenses are going to adapt to the system in Athens and find new ways to attack the Bulldogs. Schumann’s job is to create problems on a weekly basis.
“I think when you’re coaching defense, you have to evolve with the times,” Schumann said. “Every year, what offenses are going to do to attack you and their trends offensively is going to change. So, no matter where this defense has existed, no matter who’s been in charge of it, no matter what coaches on staff have been, the players — the goal has been to create a defense that can create problems for offenses. Answer the challenges they present.”
Glenn Schumann discusses Georgia making yearly changes
Georgia had one of the all-time defenses last year, being the main reason they were able to win the national championship. Now, a majority of those stars are off to the NFL, meaning there is going to be a whole new set of players running the show in Athens.

Schumann said there is always going to be a difference on a yearly basis when it comes to defenses. Whether it’s exact plays, who is on the field, and who the best players are, the co-defensive coordinator says it’s up to him and his staff to adapt and provide results.
“Every year, that will look a little bit different,” said Schumann. “Our top calls every year are a little bit different. The way we use our personnel, a little bit different. Figure out who your best players are, what you need to do successfully, and do it as a staff cooperatively to give yourself the best chance on gameday. When you do that, you get a good product.”
Now, Georgia is still going to have plenty of talent lining up on defense this year. Smart has recruited at such a high level, a reload, not a rebuild, could be in store. Still, Schumann and Co. will have to adjust and keep expectations level high.
