Kirby Smart shares his hopes for Georgia players in offseason

When spring practices and the spring semester come to an end, college football’s players and coaches can breathe for a little bit before summer training starts. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, like plenty of other coaches, are likely still busy recruiting.
But Smart has also taken some time to release and promote his new book ‘How ‘Bout Them Dawgs!’, a behind-the-scenes story of Georgia’s 2021 college football national championship season from Smart’s perspective.
While promoting his book, Smart was asked about the Bulldog’s summer plans for his players, saying that this month is primarily for rest and relaxation.
“Well I hope they get away in May, because May’s a time to get away and go be with your family, do internships, get away from football,” Smart said. “And then our guys play long seasons so they need time away.”
The college football season can be a grind and very long, and it hasn’t been longer for any other team in that nation outside of Georgia the past few seasons. The Bulldogs have appeared in an additional conference championship game and two bowl games the past two seasons on their way to back-to-back national championships, with their season consistently starting in early September and ending in early January.
A little over two months after their national championship win, the Bulldogs were back at it, kicking off spring practice on March 14. Spring practice wouldn’t come to a close until Georgia’s annual G-Day spring game on April 15.

Even before and after spring practice, Georgia’s players were still partaking in offseason workouts and class, but now they’ll have a chance to recharge their batteries physically and mentally before getting back to work this summer.
“Come June 1, they’ll all be back, at the end of May they will be back, and I’m excited for them to get to work,” Smart said. “And we do get to be with them more this summer, so we’re allowed to be out there with them, see them, and I’m looking forward to seeing them work.”
There’s no question that Kirby Smart knows what this summer needs to look like for his team, as they look to maintain the high level of success and expectations that have now been placed on the program.
Coach Smart has an idea of what a championship team looks like in the summer, and hopefully for the Bulldogs, the work their team puts in this summer can give Smart something else to write about come next January.
