Georgia safety KJ Bolden was ejected just before halftime of a game against Florida. He was thrown out of the game after being called for targeting on a video review.

The play in question occurred just inside the two-minute timeout of the first half, when Florida receiver Dallas Wilson caught a short pass. Bolden came up from his safety position and lowered his helmet into Wilson’s chest area.

Immediately, ABC rules expert Matt Austin was brought in to speak to the call. He saw it as an obvious targeting penalty.

“Well as you say this is definitely a defenseless player and I think this is targeting,” Austin said. “He gets him helmet to helmet, not necessarily with the crown, but he is defenseless so if he hits him above the shoulders that’s a foul. So I would not be surprised if he puts targeting on this.”

Upon review, the hit from KJ Bolden was verified and he was ejected from the game for targeting. Broadcaster Jordan Rodgers also chimed in on the play.

“I think it’s a targeting no matter (which) way you cut it,” Rodgers said. “Even if he wasn’t defenseless, that’s full crown of the helmet from Bolden there. And that is as much to protect KJ Bolden as it is to protect the receiver there. You just don’t want to come down and hit a receiver like that with your helmet down.”

Of note, Wilson appeared shaken up for Florida after the hit. He reportedly headed to the locker room early ahead of halftime, along with KJ Bolden.

Jordan Hall out for game for Georgia

Georgia defensive lineman Jordan Hall has dealt with numerous serious injuries during his time with the Bulldogs. Unfortunately it looks like he could be dealing with another after going down in a game against Florida.

Early in the first quarter, Hall went down on a defensive play. He immediately needed attention from team trainers.

ABC’s Katie George, the sideline reporter for the game provided an update on him. The news was grim.

“Jordan Hall spent some time in the injury tent,” George said. “His doctors and trainers tested his right knee. He was helped by staff off to the locker room. He made a heart sign and did give a thumbs up on his way off. He’s headed to X-ray right now. He is out for the game. Look for Xzavier McLeod and Josh Horton to rotate in in his absence.”
