Report: Longtime Georgia swimming coach Jack Bauerle expected to announce retirement

Longtime Georgia Bulldogs swimming and diving head coach Jack Bauerle is expected to retire this offseason, according to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde. The well-respected figure won seven women’s national championships and served at the 2008 head coach for Team USA in Beijing Olympics.

Jack Bauerle also served as an assistant coach for several other Olympic teams throughout his 43-year career at Georgia. In addition to his work in the pool, he served as co-dean of SEC coaches while tying the conference record for longest tenured head coach across all sports.

Pat Forde also spoke to the character of the swimming and diving legend in his report.

“Legendary Georgia swim coach Jack Bauerle is retiring,” wrote Forde. “Announcement expected today. … An all-time UGA ambassador and class act. He will be missed.”

Under Bauerle, Georgia swimming and diving has produced 87 Olympic athletes representing 20 different countries with 38 total medals, including 15 golds.

Under Jack Bauerle, Georgia has also won 12 SEC titles in swimming and diving. His athletes have won 175 individual national championships with 48 Top 10 finishes in team events. Through the years, Bulldogs’ have received 2,116 All-American honors while Bauerle won SEC Coach of the Year 18 times and National Women’s Coach of the Year seven times.

Georgia’s women’s swimming and diving program has also seen three members named NCAA Woman of the Year throughout the years, including Kristy Kowal, Lisa Coole, and Kim Black. The trio ties the record for most recipients from a single school.

Bauerle leaves the program in good shape after the men and women finished the NCAA championships eighth and 15th, respectively in the 2021-22 season.
