In his time as a head coach, Steve Spurrier led programs in the Florida Gators and South Carolina Gamecocks that were rivals with the Georgia Bulldogs. During that time, he was always happy to take a shot at Georgia, but going into the 2025 season, he’s still predicting the Bulldogs win the SEC.

Spurrier recently made the prediction on Another Dooley Noted Podcast. There, he broke down why he actually thinks Georgia is winning the SEC this season.

“Again, the same teams at the top,” Steve Spurrier said. “Texas. Alabama. Georgia. If I had to pick a winner, I don’t know. I think I might have to pick Georgia.”

Georgia has certainly had plenty of success in the SEC since Kirby Smart took over as head coach. Since then, the Bulldogs have won the SEC three times. That includes two conference championships in the last three seasons, winning it to clinch a College Football Playoff berth in 2024.

There are some questions that Georgia needs to answer going into next season. The quarterback position, for instance, doesn’t have a proven track record. However, Kirby Smart does. In fact, it’s his track record why Steve Spurrier is going to pick Georgia to win the SEC.

“Simply because Kirby Smart is the only coach in the SEC who has won a SEC Championship. Did you know that? So, maybe there will be a new winner this year,” Spurrier said. “We’ll just have to wait and find out.”

Following SEC Media Days, a media poll was released which had Texas ranked first. Georgia came in second in that poll. That poll also had the Longhorns edging the Bulldogs for the SEC Championship, which would be the reverse of what happened last season when Georgia beat Texas both in Austin and in Atlanta for the conference title.

Paul Finebaum declares Georgia the ‘biggest mystery’ in the SEC

Nobody expects Georgia to be less than competitive in the SEC in 2025. However, there are some questions, which makes Paul Finebaum think of the program as the biggest mystery in the SEC.

“I think they’re on that outside lane or maybe the inside lane over here. Maybe you can move quickly or get slowed down. I don’t know. They are the biggest mystery,” Finebaum said.

“I know people that firmly believe they’re capable of winning the national championship. I’m not one. You have to be careful, and they’re in that spot that Alabama has been in over the years. ‘Well, they’re Alabama.’ Well, okay. They can still miss the Playoff and lose four or five games. I think Georgia right now, because the quarterback situation is a little bit uncertain and there’s some other pieces that are unknown, could end up being a two or three seed like last year, or maybe missing it altogether. I’m not trying to create a headline there. I think they’ll be in the Playoff, but I don’t think they’ll be in by very much.”

Georgia opens the 2025 season at home against Marshall. Later, on  September 13th, Georgia will begin SEC play against Tennessee.
