Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key is receiving a boatload of praise following the Yellow Jackets’ 24-21 upset victory over No. 12 Clemson on Saturday.

Following the game, ESPN‘s Booger McFarland took to Twitter/X to call for Georgia Tech to extend Key’s contract.

Brent Key. You sir are one hell of a coach,” McFarland wrote. “If you are Georgia Tech sign this man to a long term extension soon.”

Key took over a struggling Georgia Tech program mid-season in 2022 and has slowly turned the Yellow Jackets into an absolute contender in the Atlantic Coast Conference. After going 7-6 in his first two seasons at the helm, Georgia Tech has now opened the 2025 season with wins over Colorado, Gardner-Webb and No. 12 Clemson.

As head coach at Georgia Tech, Key is now 7-1 against ranked ACC teams. “I believe in my players,” he said postgame. “I believe in my players. We’re good.”

Key’s team jumped out to a 13-0 lead with 7:46 remaining in the second quarter, but Clemson scored 14 unanswered points to take a one-point lead early in the third quarter. The Jackets however bounced back and scored via a Haynes King rushing touchdown with 10:02 remaining, taking a seven-point lead following a successful two-point conversion.

Dabo Swinney‘s Tiger’s didn’t go away without a fight, as wide receiver Adam Randall found the end zone with 3:26 remaining to tie the game at 21. Quarterback Haynes King however used his veteran prowess and guided his team on an effortless drive down the field, setting kicker Aidan Birr up with a potential 55-yard game-winning field goal.

The fire drill went off without a hitch, as Birr drilled the kick to propel Georgia Tech to the upper echelon of the ACC with the 24-21 victory. Key also touched on his quarterback postgame.

“I don’t know if he’s my little brother, because he’s closer than a cousin,” Key said. “I love this dude man. Hey, this ain’t our first time doing this now.”

For Clemson, it marks a second loss in the first three weeks of the season after falling to LSU in the opener. The preseason favorite in the ACC now faces questions heading into Week 4 against Syracuse. As for Georgia Tech, it’s another grind-it-out victory after the Yellow Jackets took down Colorado in Week 1. Brent Key’s group is now 3-0 with Temple awaiting in Week 4.
