There was no shot of the goalpost staying inside Bobby Dodd Stadium after Georgia Tech upset No. 12 Clemson on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets used a last-second field goal to earn a 24-21 victory, their first against the Tigers in a decade.

Afterward, the fans stormed the field and took down the goalposts, as per tradition. Cameras followed the goalpost out of the stadium as a crowd of students carried it through campus. They eventually dropped it in a pool outside the President’s mansion on campus.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 13-0 lead at home against Clemson early in the second quarter. However, the Tigers rallied back to take a 14-13 lead by the third quarter and put the pressure back on Georgia Tech.

It wouldn’t be until the fourth quarter, but the Yellow Jackets responded with a 13-play, 90-yard drive that quarterback Haynes King capped off by punching it in from one-yard out. The two-point conversion made it a 21-14 Georgia Tech led, but Clemson still had some fight left. The Tigers answered by marching 75 yards on the very next drive to tie the game with a touchdown of their own.

Georgia Tech got the ball back with 3:26 to go and ran the clock down to get in field goal range. That set up Aidan Birr for the potential 55-yard game-winning field goal. It was a career high for the kicker, but he calmly sent it through the uprights for the victory.

Soon after, fans took to the field and grabbed the same goalposts that ball sailed through. Surely a fine is to follow from the ACC, but that wasn’t going to stop the fans from celebrating, and they’ll likely continue to do so well into the evening.

The victory improved Georgia Tech to 3-0 (1-0 ACC) on the season. King finished the contest 20-of-28 passing for 211 yards in addition to rushing for 103 yards and a touchdown.

For Clemson, it marks a second loss in the first three weeks of the season after falling to LSU in the opener. The preseason favorite in the ACC now faces questions heading into Week 4 against Syracuse.

As for Georgia Tech, it’s another grind-it-out victory after the Yellow Jackets took down Colorado in Week 1. Brent Key’s group awaits Temple in Week 4, and the rushing attack is once again leading the charge.
