Mark Gronowski injury update: Significant news emerges in status of Iowa QB
Iowa senior quarterback Mark Gronowski left last Saturday afternoon’s game against No. 11 Indiana in the fourth quarter due to a knee injury. He was replaced by quarterback Hank Brown, who ran the offense for the final three drives.
With the Hawkeyes on a bye this weekend, a positive update has emerged on Gronowski’s health. The injury isn’t considered long-term or season-ending, CBS Sports‘ Matt Zenitz reported Saturday afternoon.
Following the disappointing 20-15 loss, Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz discussed Gronowski’s health. Prior to exiting the game, the transfer quarterback completed 19/25 passes for 144 yards and no touchdowns. He did throw an interception.
“Other than you know, he came out of the tent,” Ferentz said. “He couldn’t decelerate. That was the issue. Some positive feedback, but we’ll look at testing tomorrow and see where we’re at. Then we’ll know more.”

Gronowski, who transferred from South Dakota State this offseason, was a two-time FCS National Champion (with two FCS National Championship Game MVP Awards) with a Walter Payton Award win in 2023. In four seasons of FCS play, Gronowski completed 63.5% of his passes for 10,330 yards, 93 touchdowns and just 20 interceptions.
This season, Gronowski completed 64.2% of his passes for 636 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions across five starts. He led the Hawkeyes to a 3-2 record, although two of the three wins came against non Power-Four competition.
Iowa returns to the gridiron next Saturday on the road at Wisconsin. If Gronowski is unable to suit up, the aofremtioned Hank Brown would make his first start of the season at quarterback. In three appearances this season, Brown has completed 52.4% of his passes for 107 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
