Reigning Big 12 Coach of the Year Dan Fitzgerald has signed a six-year extension to remain the head coach at Kansas, the university announced on Tuesday.

In three seasons, Fitzgerald has led the Jayhawks to a 99-72 (43-41) record and their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2014.

“I’m so proud of where we are as a program,” Fitzgerald said following Kansas‘ season-ending loss to North Dakota State in the Fayetteville Regional on May 31. “We have an incredible administration and an incredible AD in Travis Goff and sport administrator Sean Lester. I can’t imagine two ADs in the world more invested in baseball than they are. With our entire athletic department and my staff and these guys, it’s just an incredible commitment and I’m super proud of how far we’ve come.”

Fitzgerald made the jump from Des Moines Area Community College (NJCAA) to Kansas prior to the 2023 season, replacing former head coach Ritch Price (2003-22). In his three years in Lawrence, the Jayhawks have steadily improved their record year after year from 25-32 to 31-23 to 43-17.

Kansas won 40 games this season for first time in 19 years

In 2025, Kansas won 40 games for the first time since 2006 and won 20 conference games for the first time in program history (earning No. 2 seed in Big 12 Tournament). Fitzgerald was named Big 12 Coach of the Year for his efforts and his Jayhawks were shipped off to the Fayetteville Regional, where they fell in two disappointing games.

Along with the terrific team success, sophomore first baseman Brady Ballinger (First Team), grad right fielder Jackson Hauge (Second Team), junior DH Daniel Osoria (Second Team) and sophomore right-handed pitcher Cooper Moore (Second Team) were selected to the All-Big 12 Teams. Senior third baseman Brady Counsell was tabbed as an honorable mention.

“This contract is a reflection of Dan Fitzgerald‘s remarkable impact during his time in Lawrence,” AD Travis Goff said. “The program’s progression on the field is well documented and certainly unprecedented. And this extension demonstrates our belief that we can compete for conference championships and CWS appearances under his leadership. Dan is an elite leader and mentor for the student-athletes in his program, creating a culture of accountability, holistic excellence and strong character.”

“Fitz and his wonderful family have been an ideal fit for our department and the community, and we are excited for the future of Kansas Baseball under one of the very best leaders in the country.”
