Report: Brad Calipari takes staff member role at Division I school

Brad Calipari – who spent the 2021-22 season with Kentucky as a graduate assistant for his father, John – has landed a new job. According to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, Calipari is expected to join the staff at LIU Brooklyn as the special assistant to head coach Derek Kellogg, who played for John Calipari at UMass.
Calipari, who was on Kentucky’s roster from 2017 to 2019, finished his college playing days at Detroit Mercy – where he played in 33 games over two seasons with the Titans. While at Detroit Mercy, Calipari averaged five points per game while shooting 37.5% from the field.
Calipari could’ve potentially remained on his father’s staff at Kentucky, it appears that he wants to carve out his own path in coaching. He joins an LIU Brooklyn team that is coming off a 16-14 season.

In an interview with ESPN, Reeves revealed why Kentucky was his selection after having a plethora of schools chasing after him. He said Calipari was a major attraction for what he has done over the years with top players.
“Coach Cal loves his players, he loves the game, has developed pros and won a national championship,” Reeves told ESPN on his move. “That’s what attracted me to Kentucky.”
There were four other schools in the running for Reeves, with DePaul, Nebraska, Oregon, and Xavier ending up on the losing side.
