This offseason, the Kentucky Wildcats‘ offense got a couple key new contributors. Quarterback Devin Leary transferred in from NC State to replace Will Levis. Meanwhile, Liam Coen returned as the team’s offensive coordinator.

Now, Leary has broken down his relationship with Coen ahead of the season getting underway.

“It’s really cool, honestly,” Devin Leary said. “Just to pick his brain or when we’re watching an opponent or scouting a certain team, just kind of to see how Coach Coen sees their defense or what he thinks of will work verses them or how he wants to specifically attack them.”

Devin Leary played four seasons at NC State, becoming one of the best quarterbacks in the ACC during his time there. In 30 games, Leary completed 60.2 percent of his passes for 6,807 yards and 62 touchdowns. He added five more touchdowns on the ground.

Liam Coen, a former college quarterback himself, is no stranger to Kentucky, having previously been the team’s offensive coordinator.

“And you can kind of get a feel for when he played the position, what he kind of likes, or how he sees things going about throughout the course of the game,” Leary added. “But it’s really cool that we have a relationship to where if he writes something on the board or if I come in early in the morning that I missed the meeting before, the first thing he’s asking is if I’m good with that. If that’s something I’m comfortable with and I really respect that a lot out of him. It just makes him that much easier to play for.”

The first time Kentucky fans will get to see this connection is on Saturday against Ball State.

Devin Leary says his transfer decision was a no-brainer

Recently, Devin Leary opened up about his decision to transfer to Kentucky, pointing out that the offensive weapons made it a no-brainer for him.

“[I was] very aware, honestly. That’s kind of what I saw saying when I entered the portal. You want to have a plan, to make sure that you do your homework. Obviously, seeing guys like Dane Key and Barion Brown on the film, Tayvion Robinson as well. They just stand out to you,” Leary said.

“As a quarterback, that’s really what you want to do. You have to be a point guard — you have to distribute the ball to your playmakers on the perimeter. What they’ve done last year, especially Dane and Barion at such a young age. It’s very promising to a quarterback. … It was a no-brainer.”
