Kentucky‘s in-state rival, Louisville, is attempting to bring the program back to the level of competitiveness it once had not even a decade ago. And to achieve this, the Cardinals have hired Jeff Brohm as their new head coach. Now, typically when a rival program ushers in a new era, not much changes except for a few names. But with Brohm taking over at Louisville, Kentucky’s head coach Mark Stoops elected to take the gentlemen’s approach when discussing the Cardinals’ new headman. In fact, Stoops went at far as to say he believes Brohm will do ‘a really good job’ at Louisville.

“Yeah, definitely. As I said… it’s tough because I like Jeff,” said Stoops. “And not that I didn’t like coach Satterfield, it’s just I don’t know him very well. But coach Brohn, he’ll do a really good job. I mean, obviously, great connections to the state. A strong impact at Louisville, and he’s a good coach and a good person. So they’ll do very well, and we’ll continue to battle with them and everybody else.

Brohm is a native of Louisville, KY, and played quarterback for his hometown university. He has worked his way up the coaching ladder after spending six years in the NFL and one in the XFL, from 1994 to 2001. His most recent stop was as head coach of the Purdue Boilermakers. There he took a Boilermakers program that was struggling to be competitive in the Big Ten and turned them into a contender and the conference’s Eastern division.

While the two universities represent different conferences in college sports, they still meet up with their annual showdown at the end of the year. But there is another arena that Stoops will have to face off against Brohm in, instate recruiting. And given the new Louisville head coach’s familiarity with the state, Stoops is in for a battle year in and out, getting the state of Kentucky’s top talent to become a Wildcat over a Cardinal.
