Sean Woods named head coach for Kentucky TBT team La Familia

On Tuesday, La Familia, Kentucky‘s alumni team in the TBT, announced that Wildcats legend Sean Woods will be the team’s head coach this summer. Former Kentucky point guard Tyler Ulis was the team’s head coach last season, but followed John Calipari to Arkansas and is currently on the staff there.
Woods played for Kentucky from 1988-92 and is a member of the beloved group known as the “Unforgettables.” The special class, which also included Richie Farmer, Deron Feldhaus, and John Pelphrey, stayed at Kentucky for four years despite the school being put on probation for three years.
As a result of that probation, Kentucky was banned from playing in postseason competition in 1990 and ’91. Alas, the Unforgettables didn’t allow the 1992 season to go to waste, making a run to the Elite Eight before suffering a last-second defeat at the hands of Duke and Christian Laettner.
In the Elite Eight game, Woods scored 21 points and sank the go-ahead shot with 2.1 seconds left. Although Kentucky ultimately ended up on the wrong side of the historic showdown, Wildcats fans still talk about Woods’ clutch performance to this day.
Now, Woods will have a chance to give Kentucky fans some more wonderful memories. Though it’s worth noting that he might be a bit over-qualified for the job.
Unlike most coaches in the TBT, Woods has head coaching experience at the collegiate level. He’s been the head coach at Mississippi Valley State, Morehead State and Southern.

Woods had his best season as a head coach in the 2011-12 campaign at Mississippi State. That season, Woods led the Delta Devils to a 21-13 overall record, the conference regular-season crown, the conference tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance.
While Woods’ college coaching days are over, he still contributes to the game. Most recently, Woods was named Scott County High School’s men’s basketball head coach on April 21. Scott County, located in Georgetown, Kentucky, is one of the most storied programs in Kentucky high school basketball history.
Sean Woods won’t lack talent on his TBT team. Numerous Kentucky legends have already agreed to play on this year’s team, including the Harrison twins, Doron Lamb and DeAndre Liggins.
La Familia came close to winning it all in their debut in the tournament last season. The team reached the semifinals but ultimately fell to Carmen’s Crew, who went on to win the championship. With Woods leading the way, the once-Wildcats will be hungry to take home the title this year.
