The way that rosters are constructed in college football now heavily relies on the Transfer Portal. That’s a change that has been widely debated, but now it appears that cutting down to one window to transfer is on the horizon. Certainly, that’s something that Louisville Cardinals head coach Jeff Brohm would approve of moving forward.

As of now, there are two transfer windows. One comes in December, the other after Spring practice. Now, it appears that’s going to be cut down to one Winter window. That, of course, would help solidify rosters earlier and is why Brohm wants to see that change.

“I know I’m in favor of the calendar change,” Jeff Brohm said. “I think it will be good for football to have one portal window instead of two.”

The NCAA Football Oversight Committee voted to support a single portal window. That would be just a 10-day window in January. By that point, all but a few College Football Playoff teams would already be done with their season. However, for that to be implemented this season, the vote requires approval from the Administrative Committee by October 1st.

“Just because you want to give players an opportunity to make decisions and do what’s best for them when the season’s over and we’re all for it. Whether that’s here, whether that’s somewhere else, we’re all for it. Then you want to try to get your roster set so that you don’t have to do it again in May,” Brohm said. “With people who really haven’t even played a game yet. So, I think it’s beneficial for the game of football, and I think it will be better than what we’ve had here the last couple of years of two portal cycles, for sure.”

This past offseason, there were some notable Spring transfers around the country. The biggest was Nico Iamaleava of the Tennessee Volunteers, who left for the UCLA Bruins. That forced Tennessee to scramble for a new quarterback, Joey Aguilar, in the portal. Both then had limited time with their new quarterbacks to learn their systems.

Jeff Brohm is no stranger to Spring roster turnover, either. In 2025 alone, Louisville lost seven players in the spring transfer window. They’d add 10 following the end of Spring practice.

Ultimately, not every coach is going to agree with every move that’s made regarding the Transfer Portal. There is some debate about this move to limit the portal to one January window too. Regardless, Brohm and those other coaches will continue to find ways to adjust.
