The Louisville Cardinals took care of business to open the season, dropping 51 points in a blowout win over Eastern Kentucky. However, head coach Jeff Brohm wasn’t able to get out of that game without the injury bug rearing its head.

With the Cardinals their attention to Week 2, Brohm shared an injury update on several players. That included defensive back Rodney Johnson, tight end Nate Kurisky, and offensive tackle Trevonte Sylvester.

“I think Rodney will be back for sure,” Jeff Brohm said. “Nate had an injury in Fall Camp. I’m not sure if he’ll be ready to go, which we would like to get him back. Then Trevonte probably will not be back for this game as well. He was out this last game, our starting tackle on offense.”

Rodney Johnson suffered an apparent ankle injury during the game against Eastern Kentucky. A transfer who spent the last three years at Southern, the expectation was that he’d become a key member of the defense this season. Luckily, it sounds like he’ll be able to go next week.

The other two players Jeff Brohm brought up, he’s less confident will be able to play. Nate Kurisky is a tight end dealing with a hand injury. Now a redshirt junior, he was second on the team last year among tight ends with 12 receptions for 112 yards and three touchdowns. Trevonte Sylvester, meanwhile, is an offensive lineman dealing with what is currently an undisclosed injury. A redshirt senior, this is his third season at Louisville, and he’s played in 24 games in the last two season. He allowed just one sack in all of last season.

Along with Sylvester, Louisville was short offensive lineman Victor Cutler and edge rusher C.J. May against Eastern Kentucky. However, Jeff Brohm didn’t share an update on either of those two players on Monday.

Next up, Louisville is set to host James Madison. The Dukes are expected to be competitive in the Sun Belt and potentially in the College Football Playoff race as the Group of Five representative. So, this isn’t one to take lightly and one that Jeff Brohm would like to at full strength for.

Nick Saban predicts Miller Moss, Jeff Brohm will be a lethal combination for Louisville

Expectations are high for Louisville around the country. Even legendary head coach Nick Saban does, pointing to the connection between Jeff Brohm and Miller Moss.

“Miller Moss ends up at Louisville with Jeff Brohm, which is going to be a lethal combination because of the way he uses quarterback and Miller Moss’s ability. This is going to be fantastic,” Saban said.

“I think they got a legitimate shot, I really do. They’ve got a good football team, but you never know. There’s so many changes, positive changes of leadership, culture changes. But I think they’re going to have a shot.”
