Maryland guard Rakease Passmore will miss the 2025-26 season due to a torn Achilles tendon, per CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein. Passmore transferred to Maryland this offseason after spending his freshman year at Kansas.

In his debut campaign with the Jayhawks, Passmore made 23 appearances. He averaged just 0.7 points in 5.0 minutes per game. He shot 6-21 (28.6%) from the field and 2-9 (22.2%) from beyond the arc.

Rakease Passmore played high school basketball at Combine Academy (NC), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 41 overall player and No. 14 small forward in the 2024 recruiting cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings.

When new Maryland head coach Buzz Williams was still at Texas A&M, he recruited Passmore when he was in high school. Once Passmore entered the transfer portal, Williams reconnected with him.

“Out of high school, Coach Buzz was recruiting me pretty hard as well,” Passmore told Maryland Sports Radio’s Brendan Hartlove. “I feel like they had a plan and had everything else set up in the way they did things. And you know, Diggy came here. That’s my former teammate at Kansas so it was like a no brainer.

“It’s like a big family thing… Buzz is more like a family type of guy so I find that a very big piece of why I came here. And then development wise. So all that stuff in one is going to help me a lot.”

Passmore’s teammate at Kansas, David Coit, also committed to Maryland this offseason. Passmore boasts rare athleticism. He entered college with a jaw-dropping 46-inch vertical. Earlier this year, Passmore explained his style of play.

“I’d say very energetic. Explosive. I like to jump a lot. Knock down 3’s. I just keep it real simple. Whatever Coach wants me to do,” Passmore said.

Unfortunately, Passmore won’t be able to show off his talents this season. He was one of 10 total transfers who joined Maryland this offseason.

Maryland hired Buzz Williams in April after head coach Kevin Willard left the program to take over at Villanova. Williams spent the past six seasons at the helm of Texas A&M, leading the program to a 120-73 overall record during his tenure.

The Aggies reached the NCAA Tournament in their final three seasons under Williams. Now, the 53-year-old head coach will look to guide the Terrapins to similar heights.
