The Maryland Terrapins pulled off one of the biggest coaching hires in this coaching carousel, hiring Buzz Williams away from the Texas A&M Aggies. Now, those contract details have been revealed for Williams.

According to a recent report, Williams has a six-year contract that will pay him $4.8 million annually. That $4.8 million salary will increase by $100,000 annually in the deal. That means he’ll be set to make $5.3 million in his final year on the contract.

Buzz Williams is replacing Kevin Willard at Maryland who left to become the head coach at Villanova in his own right. In three seasons with the Terrapins, Willard was able to make the NCAA Tournament twice, including a run to the Sweet Sixteen this past season. That was the program’s deepest tournament run since 2016.

Maryland will be the fifth spot where Buzz Williams is the head coach. In his most recent stop at Texas A&M, he had a record of 120-73 over six seasons, including three straight NCAA Tournament appearances to end his tenure there. While there, he was twice named the SEC Coach of the Year. Williams also has previous stops at Virginia Tech, Marquette, and New Orleans as a head coach.

Over the course of his 18 seasons as a head coach, Williams has a 373-228 record overall. He also has 11 career NCAA Tournament appearances, including a run to the Elite Eight while he was with Marquette. That is the deepest run he’s made in the NCAA Tournament. He also has four Sweet Sixteen appearances, with the most recent of those coming in 2019 with Virginia Tech. Now, he’s hoping to get Maryland back to that stage of the NCAA Tournament and beyond in the coming seasons.
