Miami offers top-70 QB Jake Merklinger

Savannah (Ga.) Calvary Day School four-star quarterback Jake Merklinger received an offer from Miami Monday. He announced the news on Twitter.

Merklinger is the No. 65 overall prospect and No. 7 quarterback in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 11 player in Georgia.

On3 rates Merklinger higher than other recruiting services, according to the Industry Comparison. Per to the 2024 On300, Merklinger is the No. 63 overall prospect, No. 5 quarterback and No. 8 player in Georgia.

The 6-foot-2.5, 195-pound Merklinger holds 24 Power Five offers the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine currently has Tennessee as the heavy favorite to land a commitment from Merklinger at 36.5%.

Back-to-back national champion Georgia extended an offer to Merklinger who is a Georgia legacy as his mom graduated from there.

“It puts them in the mix,” Simmons said in a February edition of The Inside Scoop, On3’s recruiting show. “Obviously, he’s an in-state kid, like I said. His mom went to school there. He’s probably visited Georgia as much or more just from a fan standpoint, and recruit too, more than anywhere else.”

Other schools that Simmons said are in the mix for Merklinger include, Tennessee, Michigan State, North Carolina and Clemson.

“I think it’s still to be determined just where he’s at, not just for Clemson, but for now, a new OC: Garrett Riley,” Simmons said of Clemson. “How does he see that connection? Is he a potential fit there for him in that scheme?”

Among the more accurate top quarterbacks in the 2024 cycle, completing over 70 percent of his passes as a sophomore. Comfortable navigating the pocket. Sees the field well, finding open receivers while under pressure. Shows the ability to quickly react and escape from pass rushers.

“Functional mobility both in and out of the pocket is among the best among top 2024 quarterbacks at this juncture. Can pick up chunks of yards with his legs on designed runs and scrambles. Has shown a good arm to this point, but can continue improving his velocity as he gets stronger, in addition to tightening his release. A multi-sport athlete who also plays basketball and lacrosse.”
