The Miami Hurricanes are headed to the Super Regionals for the first time since 2016 following its 5-4 Hattiesburg Regional Final victory over Southern Miss on Monday night.

J.D. Arteaga was an associate coach at Miami from 2003-2023 before getting promoted to head coach following the departure of Gino DiMare. Now in the second season under guidance from the long time Hurricane, Miami is two wins away from its first Men’s College World Series appearance since 2016.

“I’ve said all along that this is a special group,” Arteaga said to kick off his postgame comments. “I told the team that this game rewards teams that do things the right way and plays hard with confidence and courage. Can’t help but think there’s some divine intervention with some of the plays. Plays that aren’t the normal way you draw it up in baseball, seemed like everything went our way.”

In his first season in charge in 2024, Arteaga and Miami finished with a less than stellar 27-30 record and missed the NCAA Tournament. His second season however has been a resounding success, and he continued to show gratitude for his first Super Regional appearance as head coach postgame.

“I’m happy for my group of guys man,” Arteaga said. “I get to spend another week with this group and I want to extend it as far and long as possible. What makes it so special is that I get to enjoy it with these guys. I’m thankful for that and I thank God every day for where I’m at, where I’m coaching and the guys I’m coaching with. From my staff to coaches to players to everybody up and down. I’m just thankful. I thank God every morning.”

Miami, which was the No. 3 seed in the Hattiesburg Regional, upset No. 2 Alabama 5-3 and then dominated No. 4 Columbia 14-1 in back-to-back days. This propelled the Hurricanes to the Regional Final against No. 1 Southern Miss, which fought its way out of the loser’s bracket. The Eagles took the first game 17-6, but Miami held them off 5-4 in the winner-take-all matchup to take the Region.

Due to upsets in both Regionals, Miami will now head to Louisville for a matchup with the Cardinals in the Louisville Regional. These two programs are just two of five remaining ACC teams in the final 16.

The Louisville Regional begins Friday at 3:00 pm EST (ESPN2).
