Joel Klatt sees Miami as overrated in College Football Playoff ranking
Joel Klatt has thought for some time now that the Miami Hurricanes have been overvalued, especially now within the rankings for the College Football Playoff.
Klatt noted the Hurricanes’ latest ranking at No. 6 by the CFP Selection Committee during his show this week. He thinks they’re getting a lot of extra love from that committee as compared to others, including from the polls that have them a slot or two lower at No. 7 or No. 8 as well as from him too as Klatt has them at No. 9.
“Miami gets a big benefit of the doubt from the committee, by the way,” said Klatt. “The committee is liking them a lot more than the AP, more than a lot of people, I think.”
“I think that Miami is a bit overrated here from the committee.”
Miami, despite the close calls with one loss during a stretch of a month and a half this season, has been one of the better teams in the sport this year at 10-1 overall entering the final weekend. The Hurricanes have done that against a so-so strength of schedule as compared to other teams trying to make the playoff. They have also in that time posted the No. 1 offense in the nation behind the play of QB Cam Ward.
As Klatt added, there are things to like about The ‘U, especially with them a win away from playing for the ACC Championship.

“Now, you can argue with that. Sure,” said Klatt. “I’m sure that there are arguments because they do have Cam Ward. They do have a couple of nice wins, in particular after Florida picked up that win against Ole Miss. That win in The Swamp to begin the season looks a lot better for Miami, in particular after this last weekend. So I understand that.”
Still, when looking at Miami with teams alongside them, namely SMU and Indiana by him here, Klatt doesn’t see that much of a difference in seeding despite there being one.
“But then SMU at nine and Indiana at ten?” Klatt wondered.
If Miami wins on Saturday, though, ranking won’t matter much anymore with them. With the ‘Canes being where they are, a win at Syracuse would almost certainly have them in the playoff at this point with a game then likely against SMU in Charlotte being the difference between a first-round bye and an at-large in the CFP.
Klatt is just saying that, when compared and contrasted with some of the teams, six feels high to him for the Hurricanes.
