The Miami Hurricanes took a big blow to their secondary. Defensive back Keionte Scott suffered a recent injury, which now looks like it has sidelined him for the remainder of the season.

Miami head coach Mario Cristobal recently shared that Scott is dealing with a significant foot injury. While Cristobal doesn’t want to say it’d be impossible, it’s now looking unlikely that he’ll be able to play again this season.

“I don’t know,” Mario Cristobal said. “I don’t know. Like we mentioned, it is a more significant injury. You certainly hope and pray for, but it doesn’t look like it’s very likely. But I’d hate to rule it out completely, because you just never know.”

Scott was initially injured in the win over Syracuse on November 8th. Since then, he’s been seen in a walking boot. However, Cristobal has been tentative to give an exact update on that injury, other than calling it a significant one.

Primarily playing from the nickleback position this season, Scott has been among the best corners in the entire ACC. He has 44 total tackles this season with 10.0 tackles for a loss and 3.0 sacks. He also has an interception that he returned for a touchdown and five passes defended. So, losing his production from the secondary is a major blow.

This is the first season for Keionte Scott in the Miami program. He had spent his previous three seasons playing for Auburn. Prior to getting injured, he shared some insight into his breakout season with the Hurricanes.

“I just feel where my mindset was last year compared to now, did some self-scouting, have been real honest with myself, heard comments being made and put all that energy going against me going toward what I can do better and control in certain situations,” Scott said. “Just focus. I used everything I went through and listened to and everything that was being thrown at me – I use that on the field.”

This all comes at a time when the Miami Hurricanes are battling for a spot in the College Football Playoff. With two losses in ACC play and a crowded field, it seems unlikely they’ll be able to do so as a conference champion. That means that the Hurricanes need to find a way to make it an at-large bid. That, in turn, means avoiding a loss in the last two weeks to either Virginia Tech or Pitt.
