Mario Cristobal addresses social media takes that Carson Beck threw Miami teammates under the bus

Last Friday night’s upset loss was a disaster for the Miami Hurricanes, dropping their first game of the season to Louisville. In particular, it was a very difficult night for quarterback Carson Beck, who threw four costly interceptions.
After the game, social media piled on Beck. Not just for his performance, though. There was also a perception that he was throwing his teammates under the bus during his postgame press conference. That criticism wasn’t something head coach Mario Cristobal was necessarily aware of before being asked about it during Monday’s press conference. However, once he was aware, he pushed back on the idea that’s what Beck was doing.
“I wouldn’t be aware or in tune with,” Mario Cristobal said. “You know, just trying to digest your statement in terms of people under the bus. Again, that doesn’t exist here because it’s not part of the culture and just not allowed. It just has no place. But I think the entire team has complete clarity that every coach, every player, everybody takes this, every win and takes every loss together. There is no exception, and again, there is no blame or finger point.”
Beyond that, Cristobal doesn’t want to allow for that type of behavior to happen in the culture, he also doesn’t agree with the idea Beck threw anyone under the bus. In fact, he hasn’t noticed that behavior from anyone within the program.
“Like I mentioned there, that’s something that’s very new to me,” Cristobal said. “And you bringing that up, but there is no hint or inkling of any blame being passed around to anybody in our room, our locker room, or our building.”

Miami would fall 24-21 on Friday night. In a one-score game, those four interceptions and a -3 in turnovers on the day were incredibly costly for the Hurricanes. Naturally, after the game, Beck was asked about those turnovers. While explaining a miscommunication, Beck stepped in what some on social media took issue with.
“I think there was a miscue or miscommunication of the play, and the routes that were supposed to be run,” Beck said. “The guy was able to undercut it because we weren’t in the right place. We have a perfect play for it. …(Lofton) just ran the route wrong, and I went to go throw it, because we’re hot off the pressure and again, he made a good play on it, but it definitely didn’t help that we ran the wrong play.”
One pundit, in particular, seemed to lead the charge in his criticism of that explanation. Danny Kanell wrote on social media, “I’m sorry but as a franchise QB you simply throw your guys under the bus like this.” That was in a post that included the video of Beck sharing the miscommunication.
Fans and pundits can debate what Beck meant by his comments. For Miami, there’s no time to look back with so much of the season still ahead of them. In particular, if the Hurricanes want to compete for an ACC Championship and the College Football Playoff, they’ll need to avoid a second loss. That means turning the page to Stanford, who Miami hosts at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday.
