Miami is headed to Super Regionals for the first time since 2016 after taking down host team Southern Miss in a winner-take-all regional final game Monday evening. The Hurricanes pulled away in the fifth and sixth innings for the 5-4 win and are now two more victories away from Omaha.

Southern Miss made things interesting with a two-run homer from Carson Paetow in the bottom of the ninth to cut it to a one-run deficit. However, the Hurricanes were able to avoid letting the tying run score as they secured the final out on a fly ball to left field.

Things were tied at 1 run apiece heading into the fifth, but Miami took the lead on an RBI double from Jake Ogden. It would go on to add another off of a single from Max Galvin to go up 3-1.

That advantage increased to 5-1 after another two runs in the sixth as the Hurricanes never trailed after that. Dorian Gonzalez made sure things got started off right in that frame with a leadoff home run to set the tone. Another run came in when Michael Torres hit an RBI single a few plays later.

Southern Miss scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 5-2 Miami lead, providing a glimmer of hope at a comeback. The Hurricanes looked in trouble when two runners made it on in the bottom of the eighth, but pitcher Brian Walters entered the game to get them out of that jam and come away with the save.

Overall, the Hurricanes finished the game with nine hits as Torres and Tanner Smith tied for the team lead with two apiece. Will Smith got the win at pitcher with four strikeouts across three innings of work.

Even more impressive is that this performance comes just one year after Miami finished with a losing record for the first time since 1957. They’ve bounced back incredibly as they hope to find their way into the College World Series for the first time since 2016 thanks to this win against the No. 16 seed.

Before then, Miami moves on to face ACC foe Louisville in the best-of-three Super Regionals matchup. The Hurricanes did not face the Cardinals during the regular season, however, so this will be an unfamiliar foe.
