Todd McShay explains why Carson Beck, NFL are a 'toxic relationship'

Carson Beck has had a better season this year at The ‘U.’ That said, in his evaluation of him, Todd McShay knows that he’s a prospect that he should maybe quit, even though he just can’t.
McShay discussed Beck earlier this week while on ‘The Triple Option.’ He likened it to a toxic relationship that isn’t going well for either side, but that each person keeps coming back to the other despite that.
“Carson Beck? I talked about it on our show today. It’s like a toxic relationship, right?” McShay stated. “We’ve all been in that relationship, whether it was middle school, high school, wherever, college, where, like, you’re dating someone and – it’s like, every evaluator has a relationship with the prospect and there’s highs, there’s lows. You’re defending him to certain friends.
“But anytime you’re in a toxic relationship, typically, you wind up taking a break. And then, you know, you hear from all your friends – that person’s not faithful to you, and this person does that. But then you see he or she does some good deeds, and then you kind of go back.”
That breakup and getting back together have played out fully for McShay with Beck since this offseason, when he transferred from Georgia to Miami. McShay was over it but has bought back in during this season with the Hurricanes, with Beck posting 74.3% completion for 242.6 passing yards per game, 11 touchdowns, and three interceptions. He was an early contender for the Heisman Trophy through the undefeated start by the Hurricanes.

However, last week was the latest bump in the relationship for McShay. That’s as Beck went 25-35 (71.4%) for 271 yards, no touchdowns, and a career-high of four interceptions in a 24-21 upset loss to Louisville, along with some postgame comments made by the quarterback of the ‘Canes.
“That was the summer with me. I had to take a break from Carson Beck. But, then you start to hear the reports that things are going really well in Miami – good character, he’s first in the building and last guy out, he’s more decisive, he’s throwing the ball accurately. And you start to see it early in the season,” sad McShay said. “But, with every toxic relationship, you wind back up with that person, you expect a different result and it’s always the same result, right. And I feel like this last Friday night against Louisville, it was that moment where it’s like, yep. And then, after the game, the interview and kind of putting it on his receiver?”
Some people never quit that one relationship, regardless of how bad it may be for them. McShay, though, may be out on Beck again, with his trust having been broken one too many times by him as a player being considered by the NFL.
“It’s like, the most important thing in a relationship is trust. And I think it’s the most important thing…as a coach with your quarterback? It’s trust,” McShay said. “I just, it always feels like he breaks that trust for me.”
