Biff Poggi reveals why TJ Guy did not play for Michigan in Week 3

Michigan acting head coach Biff Poggi addressed why defensive end TJ Guy did not play in Saturday’s contest against Central Michigan. Thankfully, it had nothing to do with injury.
Poggi explained that it was mostly a decision based on the game plan. The Wolverines certainly held their own just fine in Guy’s absence to roll to a 63-3 win.
“TJ is fine,” Poggi said. “Just using a game plan against a heavy run team. So we wanted some bigger bodies in there on that. But no issues with TJ. He understands it. He’s a complete team player and all good with it.”
Guy was a key player for the Wolverines last season to record 32 tackles, 5.5 sacks and six QB hurries on his way to being named the team’s most improved player. He recorded an interception in the season opener this year as well as three tackles in Week 2 against Oklahoma.
The 6-foot-4 defensive lineman is in his fifth season with the Wolverines. He has played in 38 games across that span with five starts, including two this year. His teammates were expecting a big year out of him heading into this season.

“TJ is one of those guys who I feel like if you’re a younger guy, I will for point you in his direction like, ‘Look at him,’” said senior EDGE Derrick Moore, a returning starter. “TJ’s been here five years. He’s a fifth-year grad. He’s patiently waited his time. He has a lot of maturity.
“Now, he knows his worth, and I think he’s just ready to show the world who TJ Guy is.”
Guy has proven he can be a game-changer, showing out with monster performances in multiple big outings. Guy posted sacks in four clashes, with 1.5 against Washington and 2 versus Indiana this past season.
“Working out with him, working with him and talking with him, I learn a lot from him, as well,” Moore continued. “I just feel like he’s ready. That’s all I can really say. He’s ready, and he’s definitely gonna show the Big Ten and also college football who he is.”
Michigan is next set to face Nebraska at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday to open Big Ten play with a big-time game. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Guy back on the field for that contest as the Wolverines will certainly need his experience against a tough conference opponent.
