Jim Harbaugh makes the case for Blake Corum to win the Heisman Trophy

Blake Corum is starring for Michigan during his junior season in Ann Arbor. The Wolverine running back is carrying the maize and blue in the running game. That makes him a key part of the formula that has them sitting at 9-0 on the season. That’s why Jim Harbaugh is campaigning hard for Corum to be in consideration for, if not win, the Heisman Trophy.
Harbaugh discussed Corum’s Heisman candidacy during his press conference on Monday. He said Corum’s numbers line up with other great backs who have won the award before. Besides that, he should be up for it because of his importance to Michigan alone.

“He’s definitely having an MVP season for us here at Michigan. It’d be hard to imagine that he wouldn’t be (in contention for or), heck, the way he’s going, win the Heisman Trophy,” said Harbaugh. “Leading in touchdowns, leading in points scored. Consistently really good every game…I would bet my truck that Blake Corum is on pace or ahead of many of those running backs that have won the Heisman Trophy…He means that much. He’s having that kind of a season.”

Corum currently has 1,187 rushing yards and 17 total touchdowns on the year. He has accumulated all those statistics and still has three games left in his regular season. He’s tied for the national lead in touchdowns, is fourth overall in rushing yards, and sits at seventh in rushing yards per game.
In a quarterback-heavy award, Corum is the one running back that seems to genuinely have a chance to take it home. If the Wolverines remain near the top of the national standings and Corum keeps up his pace, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where he’s not sitting in New York as a Heisman finalist on December 10th. His campaign to earn his seat there will continue this weekend when Michigan hosts Nebraska this weekend.
