Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines embraced the road atmosphere during Saturday’s 38-17 win over Wisconsin.

Wisconsin’s “jump around” tradition is a staple in the Big Ten but the Michigan Wolverines erupted when the song started playing and they knew a victory was coming.

Harbaugh reacted to his team’s celebration earlier this week.

“As far as that, that was like el natural, that just happened,” Harbaugh said of his team’s reaction to “jump around” vs. Wisconsin last Saturday. “We talked about, early in the week, that when you go on the road you want to embrace that environment, make their crowd cheer like it’s your crowd cheering, make their music your music. We played that song quite a bit during the week and I think they just made it theirs in that moment.”

Jim Harbaugh added there has been a noticeable change in energy surrounding the 2021 Michigan Wolverines.

“I have noticed it for a long time now going back to winter conditioning and spring ball,” Harbaugh said. “I can see it in their eyes, they are having fun playing football.”

Jim Harbaugh and Michigan Wolverines break streak

It took seven years, but Jim Harbaugh and the No. 14 Michigan Wolverines went into Wisconsin Saturday and won, 38-17, to give Harbaugh his first win as an underdog since his arrival in Ann Arbor.

Michigan had fun with the win, too, reminding fans at Camp Randall Stadium that the 5-0 Wolverines are a force to be reckoned with in the Big Ten.

When the home team Wisconsin Badgers played their signature song, “Jump Around,” while the visiting Michigan Wolverines held a comfortable lead, Michigan did just that — jump around.

The Wolverines on the sidelines were rambunctious when the song came on. Michigan players and coaches alike began dancing, jumping and singing in unison with the song.

Heading into the game, the Jim Harbaugh-coached Michigan football program was 0-12 in the previous six seasons as underdogs. In the process of beating Wisconsin, Michigan also beat Wisconsin in Camp Randall Stadium for the first time in 20 long years.

Perhaps Michigan’s win was a statement victory, one that Harbaugh so desperately needed in his seventh season at the helm. The Wolverines move to 5-0 after the latest victory, and it’s come time for ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit to label them a “complete team” — despite his allegiance to Ohio State.

“Huge day for [Coach Jim Harbaugh] and [Michigan],” Herbstreit wrote on Twitter. “Defense shut down Wisconsin running game to only 43 yards, created three turnovers and were disruptive all game. And [quarterback] Cade McNamara opened it up more today, continuing to play with great efficiency. Wolves proving to be a complete team after five weeks!”

Michigan is now 2-0 in Big Ten play, and although its last win against Rutgers was nothing to write home about, beating Wisconsin on the road — no matter the state of Wisconsin’s team — is certainly something for Harbaugh to be proud of.
