Michigan grad Taylor Lewan reacts to Sherrone Moore firing, encourages Wolverines to make next hire quickly
The Michigan Wolverines have found themselves in turmoil as a program, following the firing of head coach Sherrone Moore. That firing was for cause and came as a shock to many around the country.
Former Michigan star Taylor Lewan would appear on Get Up the following morning. There, he shared some of his initial thoughts on the firing.
“Obviously, all of the allegations that are taking place, we’re not gonna comment on that,” Taylor Lewan said. “But my heart goes out to the people that are affected, and the players who are in that building that no longer have a head coach. They did just 24 hours ago.”
Sherrone Moore first came to Michigan as a tight ends coach in 2018, later moving up to offensive coordinator during their national championship run. After that, he would be elevated to head coach in 2024. During that time, Moore would go 16-8 as the head coach. He also received a show-cause penalty related to the sign-stealing allegations.
Michigan announced that Sherrone Moore would be fired for cause on Wednesday afternoon. In a statement, the school said an investigation found “credible evidence that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.” Later in the day, Moore would be detained amid an investigation into an alleged assault.

“The first thing you’re gonna see is, obviously, the head coach has been fired and then all the rumors and stuff going on. So, like everything, the group chats are gonna fire up. Guys are gonna have speculation of what was going on, how long this stuff was going on. So, everybody will do the same thing that kind of all of us on the internet are doing today. Then it’s an emergency team meeting,” Lewan said. “Whether it’s with the AD, whether it’s Biff Poggi, giving everyone the lay of the land for everyone in that room. It’s about keeping people together because what Michigan prides itself on is winning championships and developing players.”
Taylor Lewan would go on to insist that Michigan needs to find a way to move on quickly. After all, with the Transfer Portal set to open up, retaining the roster and moving on is paramount.
“If they can keep everyone in house, they have the guys to do that, they have the recruiting class to do that. They have everything there and now we’re going into the Transfer Portal, which opens up January 2nd. It is so imperative that Michigan gets the right guy in as fast as possible,” Lewan said. “Because if they do, if they take longer than January 2nd, Michigan is dangerously close to going through what Penn State has gone through for their coaching process.”
Biff Poggi is acting as the interim head coach at Michigan for the time being. The Wolverines still have a bowl game to play, on December 31st against Michigan in the Citrus Bowl.
