Ann Arbor is where one of the more notable quarterback competitions in the country is still ongoing. With that, Michigan’s Sherrone Moore has officially set a deadline for when the Wolverines will announce their starter to open this season

At his press conference on Tuesday, Moore revealed that he’ll share who their starter is come game week going into the maize & blue’s opener against New Mexico. That opens up a two-week window before Michigan makes their decision known between QBs Bryce Underwood, Mikey Keene, Jadyn Davis, or Jake Garcia ahead of game one against the Lobos.

“Quarterbacks have been great. Much-improved, playing at a really good level,” said Moore. “You know, we’ll see where it goes and how far we’ll go to that.

“As far as naming a quarterback? I know you guys want to know who the quarterback is. I’ll tell you on game week, before any questions come about that.”

Michigan has had an offseason-long competition with essentially all-new names in their quarterback room. Underwood is the biggest name of the four as the No. 1 incoming freshman in the nation from the 2025 recruiting cycle. Keene (Fresno State, UCF) then transferred in back in the winter while Garcia (East Carolina, Missouri, Miami) arrived from the portal during the summer in June. Davis is then the lone returner with one appearance made as a true freshman last season. To this point, Underwood and Keene have bene projected as the two most-likely names to win the job but, again, nothing has yet been made official on the depth chart.

Outcomes of quarterback competitions are starting to trend, if not already be decided, at this point of fall camps ongoing all around college football. However, Michigan, maintaining that this battle will continue on, won’t make their choice, at least publicly, until the days during final week of the month going into their opener on August 30th.

Michigan QB battle: Sherrone Moore lays out expectations for starter

Sherrone Moore didn’t name a starting quarterback at his presser today but he laid out the expectations for the eventual winner of the battle. Bryce Underwood, Mikey Keene, Jadyn Davis, and Jake Garcia were all still mentioned by name as part of this competition while he met with the media this morning.

“Whoever the starting quarterback is, is to raise the level of the team, you know. And for (Underwood), for Jadyn Davis, for Jake Garcia, Mikey Keene, to make sure that they put themselves in position to make that they’re the best quarterback version, or best version of what they can be for Michigan Football and be leaders of the offense,” Moore said. “Obviously, we’ve always talked about the offense is led by and the team is led by the offensive line. But the quarterback has to be the captain that room, that offense. So, you know, whoever that is, that’s what I want them to be.”
