Michigan to retire Trey Burke's jersey into Crisler Center rafters on January 23 vs. Ohio State

Trey Burke was one of the best players, let alone guards, in the history of Michigan Basketball. Now, nearly 13 years since his final game in maize & blue, No. 3 will be officially retired in Ann Arbor.
Per an announcement by the program today, Michigan will honor Burke by retiring his jersey this season. That will come on January 23rd when the Wolverines will play the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Crisler Center. They will also hand out commemorative banners of his jersey to the first 5,000 people in attendance on that Friday night.
“Dusty May and the University of Michigan men’s basketball program announced today (Friday, Oct. 3) that the Wolverines will honor the career of former consensus National Player of the Year Trey Burke by raising his No. 3 jersey to the Crisler Center rafters when U-M hosts Ohio State on Friday, Jan. 23,” their statement read on Friday.
Burke has been around the program as recently as two years ago, when the Wolverines honored his team, which was the national runner-up, in 2013. He discussed then what it would honor it would be to see No. 3 raised.
“That would mean the world. It would mean the world, honestly,” Burke said at the time. “That’s something you dream about as a kid. Growing up, I loved college basketball; I watched college basketball. I was one of those kids that was running around with a little rubber basketball, dreaming of making big shots. Just to have something to leave your legacy on something like that at such a great university like Michigan, that would be great for me. I would love that.”

In 73 games as an underclassman at Michigan, Burke averaged 16.9 points (45% FG, 36.7% 3PT on 1.8 makes), 5.7 assists, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game. His sophomore season, though, is what he was most remembered for when he posted 18.6 points (46.3% FG, 38.4% 3PT on 1.9 makes), 6.7 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game.
In that sophomore year, Burke won AP National Player of the Year, the Wooden Award, the Naismith Award, and the NABC DI Player of the Year while being a Consensus First Team All-American and the winner of the Bob Cousy Award. He was also the Big Ten Player of the Year and First Team All-Big Ten. With that in that season, Burke led Michigan to a record of 31-8 overall. That was highlighted by him taking the Wolverines to the national title game in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. As a No. 4 seed, Michigan lost 82-76 to No. 1 Louisville – but that championship has since been vacated by the NCAA.
After that collegiate career, Burke was the ninth overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. He’d go on to have a nine-year career in the NBA with the Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, and Philadelphia 76ers. Over that near decade as a pro, Burke averaged 9.6 points (41% FG, 34.5% 3PT on 1.1 makes), 3.1 assists, and 1.8 rebounds per game. He also represented the United States in international play and has played for a time overseas this decade.
Five players have ever had their jersey retired at Michigan. Burke will now join them as the sixth.
