Sherrone Moore charges: Ex-Michigan coach posts bond, released from Washtenaw County Jail

Sherrone Moore has posted bond and has been released from the Washtenaw County Jail, according to jail records. The former Michigan head football coach was formally charged Friday following his detainment earlier this week in Washtenaw County, Michigan, stemming from an incident that occurred on Dec. 10.

Prosecutors allege Moore was unarmed when he entered a residence through an unlocked door without permission. According to court filings, a verbal confrontation ensued and escalated inside the home. Authorities say Moore retrieved knives and scissors from a drawer and threatened to harm himself, allegedly telling the woman involved that “my blood is on your hands.”

Moore reportedly left the residence after the woman contacted her attorney and said she would call the police. Prosecutors described the victim as having been “terrorized” by the encounter.

The former Michigan head coach faces multiple charges, including third-degree home invasion, stalking and breaking and entering. Under Michigan law, third-degree home invasion is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $2,000 fine. The stalking charge is a misdemeanor that carries a potential penalty of up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. The breaking-and-entering charge is also a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Moore was originally booked into the Washtenaw County Jail at approximately 8:30 p.m. ET on Dec. 10, following his detainment earlier that afternoon. The Pittsfield Township Police Department responded to a call around 4:10 p.m. ET in the 3000 block of Ann Arbor-Saline Road while investigating an alleged assault.

“This incident does not appear to be random in nature. There appears to be no ongoing threat to the community,” the department said in a statement at the time.

ESPN’s Dan Wetzel first reported Moore’s detainment, with The Detroit News later confirming police involvement. The City of Saline Police Department stated it assisted in locating Moore before transferring him to Pittsfield Township authorities for investigation.

During Moore’s arraignment, a judge set bond at $25,000 and imposed several conditions for his release. Moore must wear a GPS ankle monitor, abstain from alcohol, marijuana and non-prescribed controlled substances, and may not possess or purchase firearms or other dangerous weapons. He is prohibited from leaving the state of Michigan without court permission and must continue all prescribed mental health treatment.

Additionally, Moore is barred from having any contact with the individual involved in the incident, including phone calls, messages, emails or indirect communication, and may not go to the individual’s location for any reason.

The University of Michigan terminated Moore for cause on Dec. 10, citing an internal investigation that found credible evidence of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Athletic director Warde Manuel announced Biff Poggi was appointed interim head coach, effective immediately.

Moore is scheduled to make his next in-person court appearance on Jan. 22, 2026, at 9 a.m. local time, for a probable cause hearing.
