Former Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore is set to be arraigned on Thursday afternoon, according to a report by the Associated Press. This comes less than 24 hours after he was fired for cause and later detained by police.

There was later a conflicting report by Dan Wetzel of ESPN. He shared that Moore remains in custody and no decision on charges is expected today.

“The matter involving Mr. Moore remains under active investigation by law enforcement, and as a result, we do not expect charging decisions or an arraignment today. Mr. Moore remains in custody at the Washtenaw County Jail.”

Court records indicate that Moore was in the custody of the Washtenaw County Jail. However, they shared few details regarding the situation. Pittsfield Township police, however, did issue a statement that officers were investigating an alleged assault on Wednesday night. Moore was not mentioned by name but came in response to inquiries about his situation. At the time, charges were pending review by prosecutors.

“Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details,” police said in the statement.

Booking records indicate that Sherrone Moore was booked on December 10, 2025, at 8:30 p.m. EST and that he remains in custody. More details are expected once he appears in court and prosecutors make their decision regarding potential charges.

Moore had been at Michigan since 2018, when he joined the program as a tight ends coach. He was later promoted to offensive coordinator and worked as the interim head coach during the 2023 season when Michigan won the national championship. In 2024, he was promoted to head coach, going 16-8. He’s also been suspended and received a show-cause penalty related to the sign-stealing allegations within the Michigan program.

Michigan announced his firing on Wednesday. In a statement, athletic director Warde Manuel confirmed it was for cause and due to an inappropriate relationship.

“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” Manuel said in a statement. “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior. Biff Poggi has been appointed head football coach in an interim capacity, effective immediately.”

Michigan elevated Bigg Poggi to interim head coach. He’ll prepare the team for the Citrus Bowl now while the school looks for a permanent replacement as head coach.
