Sherrone Moore firing: Pete Thamel pressed for further information on viral rumors around ex-Michigan coach
A lot was reported, suggested, and rumored about the details of what happened yesterday from the firing to the arrest of Sherrone Moore. ESPN’s Pete Thamel, though, wants to be careful about any of those details unless they’re from what’s eventually released by law enforcement about the now former head coach of the Wolverines.
Appearing on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ on Thursday, Thamel was asked directly by McAfee about some of the online hearsay about the circumstances surrounding Moore. However, he quickly went the other direction, as he wanted the police to release further information before he spoke about anything specifically regarding what happened following his announced firing yesterday in Ann Arbor.
“Until the police come out with a clarifying statement or a police report, I don’t think anyone can be certain of the exact nature of what he could be charged with,” Thamel said. “Obviously, there are, you know – the police specifically said they responded to an alleged assault, so that’s the baseline fact set that we are going to work off of.
“You know, this projects to be very complex. And, certainly, you know, the notions you referenced on the internet have been bounced around, but I think, you know, to be responsible here? You know, the police documents that will inevitably emerge through post-documents in this case as the days unfold here are going to be the guide to what is actually happening.”
Sticking only to what’s been reported thus far by various outlets since this was announced on Wednesday afternoon, Moore was fired for cause, due to an inappropriate relationship with a staff member that came to light as a result of an investigation, by Michigan. The Wolverines then called a team meeting to share news of the firing and name an interim at that time in Biff Poggi.

Some time later on, Moore was then detained by law enforcement and handed over by those in Saline to the police department in Pittsfield Township, who were responding to an alleged assault. Moore is still in custody at the Washtenaw County Jail, with him currently expected to be arraigned sometime on Friday.
Again, much is being suggested at this point, namely online, about where things stand in this situation. Thamel, though, did his best to outline what’s actually to come next, both for Moore as well as those at Michigan.
“Sherrone is expected to retain an attorney. We’ll find out if he gets arraigned, if he waives that pre-trial hearing,” Thamel said. “I’d expect him out in the near future. That’s just how these cases typically go. We’ll see if his case is different than that, but, usually, when someone is brought in on this type of allegation, there’s, you know, a process that unfolds in a relatively quick timeframe. The assumption from talking to lawyers in that area about how these things work is that he’d be released on some type of bond in the near future.
“Michigan officials are in shock right now, you know. I mean, it’s hard to overstate just the, you know, human nature to this there. So, I don’t expect a decision (in their coaching search), you know, in 48 hours or anything like that,” added Thamel. “Just in terms of having to gather yourself? There’s going to be a lot of board input on something like this. How much say does Warde Manuel have in this hire, you know, going forward, is going to be a question, I think, that looms over this search. So, you know, it’s going to be, from a pure football standpoint, you know, perhaps the most compelling search of this whole cycle.
