Minnesota head coach PJ Fleck signed a contract extension with the program, keeping him with the Gophers through the 2023 season. It was made official Wednesday.

Fleck is 56-39 in eight seasons in Minnesota, going 6-0 in bowl games during his time with the program. The Gophers had a Fleck-best 11 wins back in 2019, winning a share of the then-Big Ten West Division.

Other than the shortened 2020 season, Fleck has only two losing regular seasons at Minnesota (2017 when they went 5-7 and ’23 with the same record). They bounced back in 2025 with an 8-5 mark, winning the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

As the program describes him, Fleck is one of the most successful coaches in Minnesota history. That’s expected to continue into the next decade.

“The Gophers are 58-39 overall with Fleck at the helm, which includes a 6-0 mark in bowl games,” the release read. “He is fifth in program history for overall wins (58) and games coached (97) and is fourth in program history in Big Ten wins (34). Fleck’s .597 win percentage is third best among Minnesota coaches with at least 45 games under their helm behind only Henry L. Williams (.786, 1900-21) and Bernie Bierman (.716, 1932-41, ’45-50).

“Fleck and Williams are the only two Gopher coaches to record nine or more wins in a season three times, as Minnesota posted 11 wins in 2019 and nine in 2021 and 2022 under Fleck (Williams posted at least nine wins in six straight seasons from 1900-1905). Minnesota has won eight games in a season four times under Fleck (2019, 2021, 2022 and 2024), which is tied for the most in program history under one coach.”

Fleck’s players have been successful in the classroom as well. The Gophers set academic records under his watch.

“In the classroom, Minnesota has posted program record GPAs under Fleck and the Gophers have had 10 Academic All-Americans (Blaise Andries three times, Sam Renner twice, Ashton Beers, John Michael Schmitz, Jack Gibbens, Payton Jordahl and Gary Moore) and 438 Academic All-Big Ten performers,” the release read. “The 10 Academic All-Americans under Fleck represent 35% of Minnesota’s all-time Academic All-Americans (28) in program history.”
