NC State radio play-by-play announcer Gary Hahn has been suspended indefinitely following comments he made during Friday’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl, Learfield said in a statement. The comments came during a score update.

Hahn was in the middle of an update for the Sun Bowl when he said “Amongst the illegal aliens in El Paso,” according to WRAL-TV’s Keenan Willard. WRAL reached out to the university for comment, and a spokesperson sent a statement from Learfield confirming Hahn’s suspension.

“LEARFIELD has suspended Wolfpack Sports Network Play-by-Play announcer Gary Hahn indefinitely following comments made during today’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl radio broadcast,” the statement read.

Hahn has been with NC State since 1991 as the voice of Wolfpack football and basketball. He’s a two-time North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year, winning the award in 2011 and 2020.

NC State fell to Maryland 16-12 in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl to end the season with an 8-5 record.

Maryland wins Duke’s Mayo Bowl over NC State, Mike Locksley doused in mayonnaise afterward

ESPN Play-by-play announcer Anish Shroff said it best about the fate that awaited Maryland head coach Mike Locksley after his Terrapins team bested North Carolina State, 16-12, in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. “Get ready, Mike Locksley,” Shroff said on air as Maryland started to wind out the clock following a late interception.

Up next for Locksley: A date with a cooler full of mayonnaise to be poured over him. His players joined in once the postgame festivities kicked off, chanting “Where the mayo at?” as the trophy was being presented.

“I’ll do anything for a win, to a degree,” Locksley said.

Adding to the bit? Locksley sported one of the “big hats” that Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. popularized weeks ago. He did eventually take it off and got the condiment on his head.

“I figured they were done,” he said. “… Thanks for the mayo bath. It’ll be good for my complexion.”
