Nebraska is looking to add a few more key pieces to its 2024 football recruiting class, and one of those could be coming from the junior college rankings.

On Monday, the Huskers offered Garden City (Kan.) Community College wide receiver Demond Demas, a former freshman star at Texas A&M.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder isn’t ranked as a JUCO prospect yet, but was a five-star recruit in the 2020 class coming out of Houston (Texas) Tomball High. He was tabbed as the nation’s No. 23 prospect and No. 2 wide receiver that cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Demas currently has 23 catches for 269 yards and one touchdown for Garden City. In 14 games at Texas A&M as a freshman, Demas had 15 catches for 235 yards and a touchdown.

However, he was dismissed from the program in March 2022 after an arrest. On July 6, Demas pled guilty in Brazos County, Texas, to a third-degree felony charge of violating a bond and a protective order twice within a 12-month period, according to Brazos County Court Records. He also pled guilty to a class A misdemeanor charge of family violence assault that causes bodily injury. In total, Demas was sentenced to five years of probation with deferred adjudication.

He sat out the 2022 season, but was enrolled at Garden City this offseason and has played in every one of the team’s games this fall.

Huskers looking to add playmakers

In addition to Nebraska’s 26-man high school recruiting class, the Huskers are also looking to add transfers that can contribute more immediately. They look at Demas as a player capable of doing that, especially with a handful of veteran wideouts expected to move on from the program after this season.

“I’m just so thankful they made a move on me,” he told HuskerOnline.com’s Sean Callahan. “Nobody before Nebraska would pull the trigger on me. I am very, very, very thankful for this opportunity.”

Demas has been in communication with Nebraska’s coaching staff since the summer.

“I talked to all of them,” Demas added. “Coach Rhule, Garret McGuire, and six or seven coaches. I’ve been in communication with Coach Rhule a lot. I also talked with Evan Cooper.

Nebraska’s recruiting class currently sits at No. 25 nationally and No. 7 in the Big Ten, according to the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.
