Former North Carolina coach Mack Brown posted his appreciation of former QB Drake Maye amid the Bill Belichick social media ban report. Brown shouted out his former signal caller following Maye’s solid performance for the New England Patriots Sunday night, beating the 4-0 Buffalo Bills.

Belichick and the current UNC staff reportedly put a moratorium on anything Patriots related on their Tar Heel social channels. Naturally Maye, a former UNC QB, plays for New England but there were no posts Sunday about his performance. For context, former RB Javonte Williams scored twice for the Dallas Cowboys and UNC posted both scores in the form of highlight videos.

But that didn’t stop Brown from sending some love towards Maye. You can see the post below which contains a picture of Brown and Maye.

“So Happy for Drake,” Brown wrote on Twitter. “Fun to watch him win last night in Buffalo like he did so many times at UNC. Love (heart emoji) and Appreciate you my friend! Keep it rolling!”

Maye went 22-of-30 passing for 273 yards in Buffalo, leading a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter against the Bills. It was really the only semblance of offense for New England since TreVeyon Henderson had 24 rushing yards to lead the team.

Stefon Diggs had himself a day too, reeling in 10 catches for 146 yards. But despite Maye’s Sunday heroics, Belichick and North Carolina didn’t acknowledge it. To be fair, Belichick has never coached Maye, but based on the report, this is a curious choice.

Maye put up big numbers at North Carolina in his career. He started the final two years of his tenure and finished college with 8,018 yards, 63 touchdowns, 16 interceptions and a 64.9% completion percentage. It led him to becoming the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Moving forward, especially with the timing of the report, it remains to be seen if Maye will be acknowledged by his alma mater, at least on social media. CBS Sports’ Ross Martin reported the original details of the supposed social media ban.

“According to sources inside the UNC football program, it is a directive from the staff (Bill Belichick) to not tweet/retweet anything Patriots-related,” Martin wrote on Twitter/X. “That’s clearly why UNC football has not posted anything from Drake Maye’s electric primetime win over the Buffalo Bills … “Drake Maye is UNC football’s best asset right now and a massive marketing, recruiting, and fundraising opportunity. A top 5 QB in his second year and the future face of the NFL in a major market.”
