North Carolina fell to the losers bracket in the Chapel Hill Regional on Saturday, and the Tar Heels also lost their head coach. During UNC’s 4-3 loss to VCU, UNC head coach Scott Forbes was ejected in the third inning after the umpires did not call an infield fly on a shallow popup.

Now, the NCAA has suspended Forbes for two games.

“North Carolina lost 4-3 to VCU. Head coach Scott Forbes was ejected in the 3rd and has now been suspended two games by the NCAA,” WNCT’s Ken Watlington tweeted.

UNC opened regional play with a 15-4 victory over Hofstra on Friday afternoon. The Tar Heels could have advanced to the championship game with a win over VCU on Saturday, but the Rams instead advanced. Now, UNC will have to win twice on Sunday without Forbes to stay alive.

UNC begins Sunday’s action with an elimination game against Georgia. The winner of that game, which is scheduled for a 1 p.m. ET first pitch, will then advance to the Chapel Hill Regional championship game on Sunday night to face VCU. If UNC advances to the championship game, it will have to defeat VCU twice (once on Sunday, once on Monday in the if necessary Game 7) to advance to Super Regionals.

UNC AD Bubba Cunningham comments on Forbes ejection

Following the ejection and subsequent suspension of Forbes, UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham did not hold back in his criticism of the NCAA. He said that Forbes never got an explanation for the call that led to him arguing and being thrown out, yet the NCAA still came out to confirm the suspension.

“It is incredibly disappointing to have the NCAA confirm a two game suspension for our head baseball coach – yet have no explanation for the call that ultimately led to the suspension,” Cunningham said. “We must do better for our student athletes and teams.”

UNC is 39-20 overall on the season. The Tar Heels earned the No. 10 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament following an impressive and dominating run in the ACC Tournament.
